NHS begins rollout of weight-loss jabs to patients in England

From 23rd June 2025, the NHS will be able to prescribe tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) to certain cohorts of patients that meet strict eligibility criteria.

Over the next 3 years, 220,000 patients in England will be eligible however initially only a very small group of patients will meet the criteria. If you don’t meet the new NHS rules, you won’t be able to get tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) through the NHS.

The roll out will be phased over the next few years. The initial group of patients is very small. At present the practice has around only 8 patients who may be eligible for the first phase of the rollout.

Patients will need to have a BMI of > 40 (adjusted for ethnicity) AND 4 out of 5 weight related long term conditions – type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart and vascular disease, high cholesterol and obstructive sleep apnoea

This service has not yet been developed by the Norfolk & Waveney ICB and we are currently unable to initiate prescribing for Mounjaro to patients for Obesity until this has been agreed and developed.

The ICB is planning to commission a new dedicated support service for this and we are awaiting information on what this will be. Until we have a referral pathway the practice WILL NOT be prescribing this for weight loss.
